Easy 2 Ingredient DIY Dry Shampoo Recipe

How to easily make your own do it yourself version of dry shampoo with this recipe for light and dark hair!

I’ve been making my own dry shampoo for over ten years now, and it truly is the simplest product that you can create at home with very little work and cost involved.

Buying dry shampoo from the drugstore or specialty beauty stores can get incredibly expensive, which is exactly why I started researching and sought out a way to avoid spending so much money on a bottle of hair product that needed to be replaced constantly and definitely hurt the wallet to do so.

Dry shampoo is an excellent way to avoid having to wash your hair every day while also keeping it looking fresh and clean – no one needs to know how long its been since you last washed!

After much experimentation with different recipes, portions, and many many ingredients – I’ve found the perfect unbelievably simple dry shampoo recipe that you can create right at home in your kitchen or bathroom with only a couple of ingredients and 3 minutes of your time.

I’m a dark brunette so finding a way to darken my dry shampoo was super important to me. Luckily, I was able to find natural ingredients that work perfectly! Whether you’re blonde or brunette, this recipe will have you covered.

Dry Shampoo Ingredients, Mixing, & Storage

I like to make a decent sized batch every time that I make my dry shampoo. I know I’m going to use it every week, so making it in a small bulk amount saves me even more time and then I’m set for a couple of months.

Here is a list of all of the products I use to make, store, and use my dry shampoo:

  • Mixing bowl
  • Mixing spoon
  • Measuring cups
  • Plastic containers with lid
  • Fluffy Kabuki brush
  • Arrowroot powder or cornstarch
  • Cocoa powder or activated charcoal or bentonite clay or ground cinnamon
  • Essential oils (optional)

Easy Dry Shampoo Recipe

Once you have all of your supplies and ingredients handy, now it’s just time to mix up your recipe! This is the exact recipe that I use for medium/dark brunette hair.

  1. 1/2 cup of arrowroot powder or cornstarch
  2. 1/4 cup of coloring powder – I use unsweetened cocoa powder but other options are: activated charcoal, bentonite clay, ground cinnamon, or more arrowroot powder/cornstarch
  3. A dozen drops of essential oil (optional!)

And there you have it! Depending on your shade of blonde/brunette/red/black/any other color hair, you can add in more of the colorant to suit your hair shade.

After mixing the dry shampoo, simply transfer your mixture from the bowl into your storage containers and you’re ready to store your product – just make sure you don’t get any water into it when the lid is off.

To apply the dry shampoo, use a fluffy brush to dab gently into the powder (a little goes a long way so go easy with the powder at first) and then brush the powder onto your hair wherever you want the grease soaked up. After applying the powder to your hair you can simply massage it into/through the rest of your hair with your fingers, or use a brush, until it’s well blended and distributed.

Making your own dry shampoo is such an easy way to spend a fraction of the money and cut out toxins going into your hair and body. This DIY dry shampoo recipe has served me well for so long now, so I hope you try it out and love it just as much!
